feluccas

  • Egypt, Aswan (1981) - Fleets of feluccas crossing the River Nile just below the first cataract.
  • Egypt (1982) - Ailsa and me, with Carey (L) and Adele (R), at Edfu Temple.
  • Cairo, Ma'adi (1984) - Front gate of No 25 Road 5 on Carey's fifth birthday. Birthday boy is standing at left.
  • Egypt (1982) - Ailsa lounging on a family picnic in the Eastern Desert.
  • Egypt (1982) - Grant, Carey, Adele and Ailsa outside Temple of Kom Ombo.
  • Egypt, Cairo (1983) - Me, Ailsa, son-in-law Steven Privet and daughter Ann(on their honeymoon), Carey and Adele at foot of the great Pyramid of Cheops at Giza.
  • Egypt,Cairo (1981-84) - Picnic in the Eastern Desert.
  • India - Sonamarg, Kashmir (1958) - Mountain guides vying to take us up to Thajiwis Glacier. We eventually hired Anwar (yellow turban in the middle)
  • Iran, Dasht-i-Kavir, village of Torut (1959) - What was left of the mayor's house after the earthquake. The mayor is wearing the long coat and the trilby. My fat, queer, colourblind geological assistant, Hooshang Zardosht, is at extreme rignt.
  • Iran, South Edge of the Dasht-i-Kavir (1959) - Little mining town of Anarak. When we first visited, the hilltop fortress was above the snow line, the town below it. The vehicles in the town square are ours. We were filling up at the town bowser.
  • Iran - The Vale of Natanz (1959) in mid-winter. The caravanserai at Samarqand is just behind the big bare hills on the right.
  • Iran, Baluchistan, village of Bir (1961) - The father of the kadkhoda (mayor).
  • Iran, Yazd (1961) - Old man. The red colour in his beard is henna. It indicates that he has made the pilgrimage (Hajj) to the holy city of Mecca.
  • Iran, Baluchistan (1961) - Miral Khan, eldest of our troop of camel drivers.
  • Egypt, Cairo, Ma'adi (1970) - The staff of my 'Mamelouk Palace' in Ma'adi. from left: the famous Hazel (Saida bint Said bin Abdullah), cook and boss; Abdullah (suffragi - houseboy); and Abdu (gardener). Abdullah and Hazel had worked for me at 19 Sharia Port Said. Abdu (twelve years old in this picture) was the little brother of Sayeed, our gardener at No 19. I had to sack Abdu in 1971 when he stole travellers' cheques from my mother's purse.
  • Iran, Baluchistan Makran Coast (1960) - Fereidoon (Fred Saleh) aboard Mehitabel.
  • Iran, Extreme NE Dasht-i-Kavir (1960) - Pul-i-Sar Ab. This is the only crossing of a salt river (across centre of photo) that feeds briny water into the Dasht-i-Kavir. The crossing is a dangerous bog and travellers tend to wait until they can cross in a group.
  • Iran, Shiraz (1961) - A fortune-telling bird and his handler.
  • Egypt. Cairo (1966) - View south (upstream) from the ninth floor of the Nile Hilton. Tahrir Bridge in foreground, unfinished Meridien Hotel on Roda Island at far left, Giza Sheraton tower at far right - beyond island of Gezira.
  • Egypt, Cairo (1966) - Our first house in Ma'adi at 19 Sharia Port Said. The VW beetle is mine. The balcony is part of my private suite of rooms
